GROUNDBREAKING HELD FOR WHITEESBURG'S PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE PROJECT

project1.jpgA groundbreaking signaling the start of construction for a new pedestrian bridge was held in downtown Whitesburg today.  Funded in part by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet through a TEA-21 grant, the 90-foot x 16-foot bridge is designed for pedestrian traffic, and will be wide enough to accommodate vendor booths at downtown events.

“In addition to providing a safe walk for pedestrians, I believe the bridge will become a defining landmark for Whitesburg” stated Paul D. Nesbitt, PE, PLS, whose engineering firm designed the bridge.

Acknowledging the bridge as a distinct landmark, Mayor James Wiley Craft commented, “This bridge is the culmination of my effort to make the City of Whitesburg a showplace—not only of East Kentucky—but of the whole state as well.  Everyone is invited to our little town to enjoy our hospitality and see this beautiful bridge.”

Construction of the bridge is scheduled to be completed by July 1, 2009
